Yes, you read that right. The Nintendo Switch has nearly outsold the PlayStation 4 in its home country of Japan.

The Nintendo Switch has been a huge seller worldwide, with stock flying off the shelves. It’s actually incredible that Nintendo have been able to keep up with the demand. But when it comes down to it, the numbers clearly state that Japan tend to prefer handheld consoles over stationary home consoles:

Lifetime Sales (in Japan):

Nintendo 3DS: 24,407,004 units sold
PlayStation 4: 8,047,754 units sold
Nintendo Switch: 8,042,166 units sold
PS Vita: 5,858,580 units sold
Xbox One: 105,097 units sold

… Poor Microsoft.

All in all, those are some very impressive numbers considering that the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017 compared to the PS4 in 2013. It’s even on track to beat the Nintendo 3DS which launched in 2011 despite its drastically cheaper price of entry.
