What are the Best Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games?
We’re a few months into 2019 and we now have a pretty good idea of the upcoming Nintendo Switch games of 2019, so we thought we’d list the games we’re most excited for.
10. Town (Working Title)
We don’t know much about Town (we don’t even know if that’s going to be its title). All we know about it is that it is a turn-based RPG that takes place in a single village that has been overrun by monsters. Its been over six months since its reveal and we haven’t heard anything else about it, so here’s hoping for a little more information at this year’s E3.
We actually wrote a little theory about whether Town was inspired by Shigesato Itoi’s original concept for Mother 3. Click here to read it.
Release Date: 2019
9. DOOM Eternal
Panic Button are absolute wizards when it comes to porting graphically intense games to Nintendo’s hybrid console and just like they handled the port of DOOM (2016), so too will they be working on DOOM Eternal. Fans were shocked at the announcement of DOOM coming to Nintendo Switch and even more surprised when the final result was much better than we all had expected. Now in 2019, we’re gearing up for even more skull smashing, bone breaking, blood spraying mayhem!

8. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition
Dragon Quest XI was the very first game to be announced for the Nintendo Switch (then known as the NX) and finally, we now know that we’ll be holding this expansive world in the palm of our hands this year. The Dragon Quest is a pedigree series that hasn’t seem to have taken off in the west quite like it always has in Japan, but the eleventh entry may well change all that.
Release Date: Q3
7. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
The Fire Emblem game for the Switch was announced in February 2017, a month before the release of the console. It was a long time before we heard anything about it, but we now have more of an idea of what to expect. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the first home console entry since Radiant Dawn back in 2007, so Three Houses has been a long time coming and expectations are high.
Release Date: July 26

Luigi’s Mansion 3
Speaking of console iterations that have been a long time coming, the third instalment of the Luigi’s Mansion series is one of the upcoming Nintendo Switch games that we are most looking forward to. We don’t know much about this game, but many speculate that the third game in the series will be taking place in a single mansion once again but this time, in a hotel.

5. Astral Chain
This one came out of nowhere! In the February Nintendo Direct, Platinum Games announced a brand new IP, Astral Chain, that is being developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Known for his work on The Wonderful 101 and the Bayonetta series, Astral Chain is under close supervision of legendary director Hideki Kamiya, so you know it’s going to be good!
Release Date: August 30
4. Animal Crossing
As soon as the Nintendo Switch was announced, one of the first franchises that many thought would be a perfect fit for it was Animal Crossing. Well, we won’t have to wait too much longer. In the September 2018 Nintendo Direct, we received confirmation of the adorable series making its way to the Switch, but with no other news. It has been almost six months and still no more news, but here’s hoping that it’s not too far away.
Release Date: 2019
3. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
The rumour mill had been in full swing with this one, and yet it still came as a shock to everyone. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was initially released in 1993 on the Game Boy, so many young gamers today haven’t experienced this gem. Later this year, many will be able to either delve into this classic, whether it be for the first time or not, in beautiful toy-like HD graphics.
Release Date: 2019
2. Super Mario Maker 2
With the success that the original Super Mario Maker was on the under appreciated Wii U, it was only a matter of time before we saw another iteration on the Switch. Super Mario Maker 2 adds a tonne of new features, such as slopes and Super Mario 3D World assets. Levels made in its predecessor was shared online far and wide, so we’re super excited to see how well Super Mario Maker 2 performs on a thriving platform.

That’s a lot of games! And number one is…
1. Pokémon Sword/Shield
This one was probably obvious, but who isn’t excited to see a new gen Pokémon title releasing on the Nintendo Switch? Pokémon Let’s GO, Pikachu/Eevee was a fantastic start in seeing more traditional mainline Pokémon games on home consoles, but it wasn’t quite that next level that fans had been craving. However, set in the new United Kingdom inspired region of Galar, Pokémon Sword and Shield are exactly what the doctor (pre)ordered.
