Refind Self: The Personality Test Game - Switch Review
Have you ever wondered what type of gamer you are? Well, put down those cheesy “Which Mario Character Are You?” type personality quizzes that litter the internet. Refind Self: The Personality Test Game, the newest title from the developers at Lizardry, can tell you what type of gaming personality you have after around just one hour of fun interactive gameplay.
In Refind Self: The Personality Test Game, you play as an android who has recently lost their creator, the Doctor. You’re dropped into the world next to their gravestone and then are completely free to explore, interact with objects and NPCs, or do whatever else you feel like doing. But you can’t play forever. The twist being a small heart icon that fills with every choice that you make, big or small. As that metre fills, your personality is being curated to reflect the choices that you make while playing. Once the metre fills to 100%, your personality is fully constructed and the game ends, showing you your results.
The Good
I have nothing but glowing things to say about Refind Self: The Personality Test Game. If you’re having a stressful day and need something to do to unwind for an hour or so, this game is absolutely perfect. With each run only taking about an hour of time and it being a relaxing exploration adventure game with no right or wrong way to play, I think this game is perfect to play to wind down for the night.
Even though it can be finished in around an hour, it is also extremely replayable. Although I would say that the first one or two runs are the most accurate. Not only can you replay the game to try and get each of the personality types, you also are able to learn more about the overarching story with each subsequent playthrough, which I think is a really compelling way to have the story presented. Through decisions you make and not like how some games do it—by giving you the illusion of choice where both decisions lead to the same end result.
Like I said before, you are essentially thrown into the game with no objective and are free to literally do whatever you want, and I love that. There is no guidance to influence or persuade you into a “correct” path. Having no objective takes an immense amount of stress off of a game because, to me, it’s almost as if the game is saying, “Hey, go have fun! The world is your oyster!”.
When you finish your run and get your result screen, there is an actual breakdown of every choice you make in the game. Whether you picked up that flower, talked to that NPC, bought that soup, or played that arcade machine—it is all compiled into data on that final screen. Oh, and it’s not just your choices to do things that matter, but also how long it takes you to make those decisions as well! On top of just telling you the results of your choices, it even shows you how your choices compare to how other players played the game—neato! Seeing how I’m currently geeking out over the statistics screen, it’s probably not a surprise that on my first playthrough I got the personality type "Researcher." I think it’s rather accurate, if I do say so myself!
TL;DR
- Cosy and relaxing
- Freedom of choice
- Short and sweet, but replayable
- Compelling storytelling
The Bad
I am going to reiterate what I said earlier when I say that I have nothing but positive things to say about Refind Self: The Personality Test Game. However, I can see how some players may find that the game is on the shorter side. If you don’t want to replay a game, the one-hour run time of this title may be a bit lacklustre. But I absolutely think that replaying it is an integral part of experiencing the game.
TL;DR
- Short and sweet
Final Score: 9/10
Being replayable, having the freedom to play as you want to, and facilitating a stress-free environment, Refind Self: The Personality Test Game has all the makings of a perfect game to play when you need a break from your hectic life. I am definitely going to keep replaying it to collect all of the different personalities’ information. I absolutely adored this game, and I hope that you feel the same way when you refind yourself!
