Kickstarter Project of the Week: Colors Live

For this week’s Switch Kickstarter Project of the Week, we will be looking at Jes Andersson’s Colors Live. The game is slated to release approximately in Summer 2020 (winter for us down below the equator) on Nintendo Switch.

Here’s the overview:

Jens here. When I created Colors! 13 years ago, I could never have imagined the success it would become. The original Colors! for Nintendo DS™ was downloaded over a million times, and its successor for Nintendo 3DS™ is rated as the 10th highest rated Nintendo 3DS game of all time. The community has uploaded more than an astonishing 4 million paintings to the Colors! Gallery! Now, we are finally making Colors! for Nintendo Switch™ and we are bundling it with a pressure-sensitive pen. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or new to digital painting I think you are going to love it!

Many people have asked me to bring Colors! to Nintendo Switch. However, I didn’t really want to do that, unless I could make a better version than Colors! 3D. Without a pen, I would have to rely on finger-painting which is not something I think is very fun.

A little bit over a year ago, an inventor friend of mine in Hong Kong contacted me. When I saw the pressure-sensitive pen that he was working on, I realized that this would be perfect for the Nintendo Switch. Together we developed the Colors SonarPen that comes bundled with Colors Live. This way we can give you real pressure-sensitivity, a responsive way to control thickness and transparency of each stroke with just the amount of pressure applied.

I have a long history of developing video-games and therefore I’m really excited about the new game-mode we are adding to Colors Live. I’ve attempted this many times over the years, but now I think I’ve finally succeeded in making a fun game out of something purely creative.

Colors Quest is a single-player game-mode, where you paint something new every day, using a set theme and various rules. By using crowd-sourcing, I’ve managed to create something that works for every skill-level and that rewards you for improving over time. My hope is that this mode will be a great inspiration for you!

Making Colors! has been an incredible journey. From my first experiments with the Nintendo DS hardware, to founding my studio in San Francisco, and most importantly, to every day see all the amazing things that YOU create in it.

Now we are finally taking Colors Live to the Nintendo Switch. By launching on Kickstarter, we can crowd-fund what we need to manufacture the first batch of the Colors SonarPen and finish the development of Colors Live. In fact, some of you will be able to test the Colors Live prototype as soon as the campaign ends!

If you are as excited as I am about this, I hope you will consider backing the campaign and sharing it with your friends. Help us make this project as good as it can be, and I think it will be truly special!

Jens

There is a lot more information on the Colors Live Kickstarter page to which I implore you to look at but from everything shown off, the app looks fantastic. Understandably, the issue of overcoming the Nintendo Switch’s lack of a stylus was on everyone’s mind but with the Colors SonarPen that the game comes bundled with, it seems a perfect fit. I’ve never had the opportunity to go hands on with a Colors iteration before but this just looks way too good to ignore.

Colors Live required SEK 150,000 and it is currently sitting at SEK 495,540.71 after 981 backers with 26 days remaining. If you’d like to support the development of this game to help it reach its goal, click the link below to visit the Kickstarter page.
