Kickstarter Project of the Week: Girl Genius - Adventures in Castle Heterodyne
For this week’s Switch Kickstarter Project of the Week, we will be looking at Rain Games’ Girl Genius – Adventures in Heterodyne. The game is slated to release December 2022 on PC and Mac, with PlayStation and Xbox releases as stretch goals. In regards to a Switch port, here is what project collaborator Peter Wingaard Meldahl had to say when responding to a comment:
The reason Switch is not an option is that we sort of want to do it anyway. No tier required.
Nintendo approval officially required, though. But we have never had an issue with that before.
As an interesting sidenote to that, we have a long relationship with Nintendo. This includes them letting us launch one of the very first global non-game applications on the Switch. InkyPen (2nd world wide non-game app after Youtube)
It’s a comic book reader, subscription based. And of course it has Girl Genius 😉
Here’s a brief overview:
We want to make a character driven, Action Adventure “Metroidvania” game in 3D. You play as the main protagonist in the Girl Genius series, Agatha Heterodyne.
Your mission? Explore the mysterious Castle Heterodyne “Metroidvania style”, and reclaim Agatha’s ancient birthright as a “True Heterodyne”.
As Agatha discovered that her true family is not the Clay family, but the Heterodyne family, her life turned in a completely different direction. The last Heterodyne heir was thought lost 20 years ago, sending Europe into chaos. The powerful families of Europe clashed in a power struggle for control of the Heterodyne lands and properties, and at the center of the stage is Castle Heterodyne. Now used as a prison by the Wulfenbach’s, the castle is in disrepair. Agatha must repair and gain control of the ancient castle, in order to proclaim herself a “True Heterodyne”, and heir to the throne.
Agatha is a “Spark“, a genius capable of great feats, heroic actions and MAD SCIENCE! Gain new character abilities and tools in the game as Agatha learns more about herself and her powers.
When put into the right hands, a licensed game can propel the property’s world and lore to new and greater heights. I personally do not have any experience with the comic series Girl Genius – Adventures in Heterodyne but at first glance, it is clear just how rich the characters’ personalities are. From the creators of Teslagrad and World to the West, with its wonderfully bright aesthetics wrapped in a 3D Metroidvania game that are much rarer than they should be, Girl Genius is something to get your hopes up over.
Girl Genius – Adventures in Heterodyne requires $200,000USD and it is currently sitting at $49,630USD after 976 backers with 27 days remaining. If you’d like to support the development of this game to help it come to Nintendo Switch, click the link below to visit the Kickstarter page.
